Quilt Preparation

Quilt top preparation guide

The following guidelines and tips will help with the final process that brings your quilt together.

Your wadding and backing fabric must be a minimum of 4 inches larger on each side of the quilt top itself, (i.e. top, bottom and both sides). For example: if your quilt top measures 45 inches by 45 inches, your backing fabric and wadding should be a minimum of 53 inches by 53 inches. (A little extra doesn't hurt). This allows for pinning onto the fabric leaders which are attached to the rollers, and for the clamps that are gently placed either side of the quilt top to hold it in place. Often, a quilting pattern is 'off set' and I also need the extra backing fabric and wadding for the design to run off into, in this space.

Always square up your quilt top and backing fabric. The quilt is loaded to the top and bottom rails on the quilting frame, if it is not square it will not mount straight. This could lead to uneven puckering and or tucks. Please also bare in mind, any borders cut with fabric on the bias, can also lead to puckering and pleats. Any quilt tops or backing requiring squaring will be charged an additional fee.

Please press your quilt top and backing fabric. Clip any loose threads, not only on the quilt top, but also on the back of your quilt top as these may show through on your finished quilt top. Your backing fabric must be already pieced together and also pressed. If not, an additional fee will be charged.

If your quilt has any applique, or you may have used a vintage doily or lace as part of your design, please ensure these are well sewn down or basted securely. It is highly likely that any 'loose' pieces of fabric/trim will be caught by the needle or the hopping foot of the machine, which could result in the quilt top being caught and torn.

Please do not pin or baste your quilt together. This 'quilt sandwich' is part of the process that will be done on the quilting frame.

Please mark, pin or label the top of your quilt and backing fabric, indicating the quilts orientation. (i.e. which way is up!) This is very important.

When choosing your backing fabric, please take into consideration that I generally use the same colour for the top thread and bottom (bobbin) thread.

I can supply batting at an additional cost. I use a lovely lightweight Hobbs 80/20 blend. It is 80% cotton & 20% polyester. It has a lovely feel and drape to it. Alternatively, I am happy for you to supply your own batting of your own choice.

I use a lovely Superior Treads 'So Fine' 50wt. thread for the majority of my customer's quilts. It is a great polyester thread that looks and blends in well with the quilt top. Alternatively, if you prefer cotton thread, I have a fabulous Aurifil 50wt. thread selection for you to choose from.
